Tendonitis may affect any of the tendons, and it is most common around the knees, heels, elbows, shoulders, and wrists, explains the Mayo Clinic. Occurring from overuse of the joints, the tendons become inflamed, and without treatment, stiffness, numbness, and pain may develop. Due to the complexity of fine and gross motor movements in the hands and wrist, it is important to understand how inflammation of the tendons leads to hand and wrist pain.

Tendonitis in the Wrist Causes Hand Pain.

Inflammation of the extensor tendon may occur in the hands from excessive use of the tendons in a short amount of time or from other activities requiring repetitive wrist movements, reports Healthline. With time, the tendon grows weaker, and pain may develop faster and become more severe. Numbness and tingling may precede or coincide with hand pain from inflammation as well. Pain in the wrists from inflamed tendons may present as a burning sensation, hypersensitivity to cold and hot, mild to moderate swelling or tenderness. These symptoms may occur simultaneously or individually.

The condition may also occur in conjunction with tears in the tendon or cartilage, wrist fractures or small joint arthritis, resulting in additional stiffness, swelling and wrist or hand pain.

Untreated Inflammation May Progress to De Quervain’s Disease.

When left untreated, inflammation of the tendon may lead to the premature onset of arthritis in the small joints of the wrist and hand, as well as inflammation of the tendon’s protective covering, the tendon sheath. When inflammation of the tendon and inflammation of the tendon sheath (tenosynovitis) occur simultaneously, explains Healthline, the tendon may cause intense pain and lead to the degeneration of muscle tone, ligaments, and other tissues. This is known as DeQuervain’s tendonitis. The condition may also lead to trigger finger as well.

Can Hand Treatment Reduce Wrist Pain?

Hand treatments for inflammation of the tendons and tendon sheaths may vary by the severity, frequency, and duration of pain, as well as other medical and health factors, like medication contraindications or past health history. Stretching and strengthening exercises may help regain tendon strength, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to reduce inflammation. Steroid injections may also be used for severe cases.
